Success begins with Relationships
Workshops are available in the community or within your organization with intention toward building improved personal and professional capacity for connection with the self and service to others. Each workshop can be adapted to fit your group's particular needs and time constraints. The following workshops are currently available for booking:
1. On Being: The Therapist Who Changes Lives
This workshop is geared toward rehabilitation therapists or therapy students who desire to learn more about true connection with their patients in the process of their rehabilitation programs. Successful outcomes in therapy and beyond, as well as patient choice for returning to a particular setting highly depends on their relationships with their healthcare providers. Topics in this workshop include: treating without an agenda, managing difficult behaviors in patients, improving creativity and fit for patient needs, and connecting with the family.
2. Breaking Free: Managing Feelings of Judgment in Parenting Children with Disabilities
This workshop is geared toward mothers and fathers of children with disabilities that are often considered "invisible" or misunderstood in society. Examples of conditions include (but are not limited to) Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, or Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Parents of children with misunderstood conditions often experience judgment by family, friends, teachers, school administrators, neighbors, strangers in the grocery store, and even by healthcare providers. This judgment can become internalized, wreaking havoc on emotions. It has far-reaching effects on one's sense of self as a mother or father, and impacts life on many levels. This workshop helps participants develop deeper awareness of how feelings of judgment show up in life, and begins to open the conversation to ways of healing.

Living fully amidst challenges
Occupational therapy is beneficial to people who have experienced barriers to daily life function as a result of an illness or injury. With a prescription from your physician, Susan provides occupational therapy consultation in your home for adults who are living with physical, cognitive, or emotional limitations.
The way occupational therapy is delivered is quite distinct from how you may have experienced traditional rehabilitation settings. Consultation differs from predominant use of activities-based interventions, allowing for consideration of the many layers of your life including, but also beyond, your physical capacity.
Susan places a primary focus on the human being, including all aspects of mind, heart, and body in the context of daily living. So, it is not simply "doing" tasks in life. Instead, it is about the human being and the meaning each person applies to the performance of activities and roles. Susan will use inquiry, practices, and strategies to go deeper with clients in a way that opens each person to new possibilities. Both the client and family begin to shift toward a new level of vitality, even as they live in the midst of challenging illnesses or disabilities.
With this style of occupational therapy delivery, another distinction is the devoted attention to caregivers in their important life roles. This does not mean that caregivers will be "trained" to provide the care (unless you find you need to practice a particular skill). It means that caregivers, who are often spouses, parents, siblings, or other relatives, are seen as human beings, not human "doings." Much suffering can be reduced by working with caregivers from this place. Through the process of therapy, caregiver aspirations for their own lives also become possible, within the context of the family and as their own unique selves.
The number of visits and the types of intervention needed to make a positive difference will be determined on a case-by-case basis. It is important to note that Susan does not accept insurance, including Medicare. If you are wondering whether this style of therapy is beneficial for your particular situation, contact Susan for a free consultation and hourly rates.
INTEGRAL COACHING 1:1
Get support, find a new way
1:1 coaching is the most effective way to go deeper into issues or challenges that you are encountering in your life. Issues can range from difficulty with relationships, parenting, weight loss or wellness, to career satisfaction or performance. However, you may have a difficult time pinpointing what is holding you back or causing pain in your life. This is actually quite common, and you should not worry about framing your issue perfectly. You may only be able to identify the problem in a general way, such as "I'm not happy with my life" or "I can't stick to my exercise and eating plan" or "I am not enjoying parenting." Coaching will help you to sort this out.
Each and every person suffers, and at times we all need a caring, competent person to help us to see what we cannot see on our own. Coaching happens in the context of a confidential and supportive relationship where you will uncover fresh wisdom necessary to go deeper into your development. But going deeper and becoming more self-aware is only part of the equation for real change. In coaching, you will learn ways to show up in your life in what you say and do. When this happens, it is life-altering for you and has far-reaching effects on everyone around you. You find yourself more satisfied, peaceful, and productive in ways you never would have imagined.
Typically, coaching engagements are 5-6 months in length for 10-12 sessions, meeting bi-weekly for 1-hour appointments. The program includes intake and assessment, design of an integral coaching plan, and follow-up sessions to continually work with your development. Coaching can be arranged in person or via video conference, depending on your needs, location, and availability. Contact Susan for a free consultation and for program rates.
Services include 1:1 integral coaching programs, occupational therapy consultation, and group workshops. Falling Up, LLC is based in Loudoun County, Virginia.
